The Magic in Believing
Do you believe in the Tooth Fairy or the Easter Bunny? How about Santa Claus, Gnomes, Goblins, and Witches? There are so many things we can’t see, that do exist. Think about all the advancements the World has made since the Middle Ages. What a difference in the spread of germs, when we learned about bacteria. We now wash our hands, even though the germs are not visible to our naked eye.
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines magic as “the power to control natural forces that is possessed by certain persons (as wizards and witches) in folk tales and fiction. Another definition is “the art of producing illusions by sleight of hand.”
The word magic can be spelled differently depending on the meaning (use) of the word. Magic is the art of producing illusions while magick is associated with Wicca, witchcraft, and pagan beliefs. I use the spelling “magic” for all the things.
No matter the spelling or definition, I believe in magic. How do I know magic exists? It lives in my heart. The good magic, that existed when I was a child, has never left me. I love the tales of witches, good princesses, the handsome prince, and the magical castle. Santa’s spirit is not gone. He shows up every Christmas, just like clockwork. Don’t get me started about the Tooth Fairies and the Easter Bunny because I know where they live. As for the bad magic, I fear that is real too, more about that hot topic another time. Let me just say that because of the “good” magic, I can recognize and confront evil when it rears its ugly head.
There is good and bad in the world. Sooner or later we all face this fact. My wish is that children grow up only seeing the good, but at some point even children will be faced with some form of “evil”. Why make children grow up faster by making them see adult realities? Instead, let them have their childhood fantasies. These fantasies help children develop language skills, creativity, and imagination. Children’s age-appropriate books help them better understand the world around them.
The “magic” I talk about is found in the written word. The Magic in Believing is a lifelong journey to the Land of Our imagination. Hop on board for the ride of your life.
